Street Life #4: Mazorcas Asadas, Garrapiñadas y Castañas
This is a drawing of a caseta in Cuatro Caminos, Madrid. I love buying from these street food vendors. This one specialises in corn on the cob and various types of nuts. Castañas (chestnuts) are my favourite. Some of these stands seem to be open all year round, the one above was drawn in September I think. Many others only appear in wintertime, when something hot roasted over an open fire is most appealing. Another popular delicacy is sweet potato, wrapped in tinfoil and roasted whole. You can also get normal, or jacket potato as it’s called in England. Garrapiñadas are usually peanuts or almonds covered in caramelised sugar and another popular Christmas treat.
I’ll have to draw some of the other stands when I get chance. This one stood out to me thanks to the giant plastic corn on the cob.
